How I Found My Way Into PR - National Publicist Day

Like many publicists, I didn’t set out to work in public relations. I’ve always been fascinated by storytelling. Not just in one form, but across everything from movies and music to books and live events. Especially concerts and specialty movie screenings. I was the person in my friend group who always knew what was coming out next weekend, who directed everyone to the hidden-gem album or indie film, and who couldn’t help but share my excitement for whatever caught my attention. Looking back, I was doing PR long before I even knew what it was.

In college, I was a business major. I was interested in strategy, markets, and what made audiences care about a product or an idea. Then one day, someone explained to me what a publicist actually does. They described how we help shape the story around a person, company, or project and bring it to the audiences who would appreciate it most. It clicked immediately. The job description sounded almost identical to what I was already doing in my personal life: finding what’s special, connecting it to the right people, and communicating its value with passion and clarity.

That realization changed everything. I started looking at every headline and campaign through a different lens. Not simply as entertainment, but as a strategy. Behind every cultural moment, there was someone crafting the message, guiding the timing, and amplifying the story. I knew then that this was the career I wanted.

Working in PR has allowed me to merge the analytical side of business with the creative side that drew me in in the first place. Whether it’s a startup launching a world-changing technology, a new film premiering at a festival, or an author releasing their first book, each client has a story to tell, and our job is to make sure the world hears it.

On National Publicist Day, I’m reminded of what makes this profession special. In short, we are storytellers, strategists, and connectors. We thrive on curiosity, creativity, and the belief that a well-told story can change how people see the world.

For me, PR isn’t just a job. It’s a continuation of who I’ve always beensomeone who can’t help but share the things that deserve to be noticed.
