MIKIMOTO AND YOHJI YAMAMOTO: THE “STORMY WEATHER” COLLECTION

As the most established and well-respected pearl company in the world, Japanese jewelry house Mikimoto, the originator of the cultured pearl, continues to raise the bar on its competitors, designing exquisite one-of-a-kind creations that appeal to a broad clientele.

In 2007, Mikimoto collaborated with top Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto to develop a fluid and organic couture collection called “Stormy Weather.” The collection’s three lines, Moon, Drops and Le Cri, feature signature Mikimoto South Sea cultured pearls, Black South Sea cultured pearls and Akoya cultured pearls mixed with elements of 18K white and yellow gold, quartz, silver, black rhodium and diamonds. The “Stormy Weather” collection is Yamamoto’s first venture into fine jewelry design and the first partnership between the jeweler and another Japanese company.

The collaboration between the world’s oldest pearl company and one of the most exciting modern fashion designers presented a golden opportunity to generate inventive story coverage for Mikimoto as the world leader in high-end jewelry design.

RPR created a strategic media plan for the “Stormy Weather” collection launch, securing coverage in numerous high-level fashion magazines, jewelry trades and lifestyle media. Highlights of the program included the development of a cocktail launch party at the Yohji Yamamoto store in SoHo and an editor’s event that attracted top fashion editors.

RPR’s efforts earned major placements for Mikimoto in W, Time: Style and Design, Elle, The New York Times Magazine, Women’s Wear Daily and many other international and online publications. Coverage is also forthcoming in Vogue, Marie Claire, Lucky and Boston magazine.
